Thomas Party Supplies – The Background
Thomas Party Supplies are based on Thomas the Tank Engine, a fictional steam locomotive. Thomas features in The Railway Series books written by the Rev. W. Awdry and his son, Christopher and also in television spin-off series, Thomas and Friends.
Thomas is a blue tank engine with red lining with the running number one and is based on the E2 Class that was designed by Lawson Billinton in 1913. The last of the E2 Class engine was scrapped in 1950 but still Thomas can be seen today on various heritage railways.
Thomas was first seen in 1946 in Thomas the Tank Engine, the second book in the series, and was the main character of the four short stories. Britt Allcroft, the British writer/producer, came across the books in 1979 and arranged a deal to bring the characters to life as Thomas and Friends. The program became an instant award-winning hit all around the world.
Thomas arrived on Sodor in 1915. For a nominal sum, he was bought by the Fat Director. His job would be to work as a pilot engine at Vicarstown. And in the first three stories in book 2, he was used as a station pilot engine. But he used to long for more important jobs. He wanted to pull the express train like Gordon but was inexperienced and so he was not given such jobs.
But things changed in “Thomas and the Breakdown Train”, the fourth story. He rescues James and becomes a really useful engine and is rewarded with his own branch line; he is made in charge of Ffarquhar branch line. Since then, he has been the in charge of the Ffarquhar branch.
Thomas has got two coaches, Annie and Clarabel. Percy and Toby are always ready to help him and stand up to him whereas Annie and Clarabel often rebuke him. Daisy and Mavis are his other friends.
Generally, Thomas is pictured as a cheeky engine. He has got a self-important personality. He thinks that others should respect him and gets angry when they don’t do so.
Thomas was actually one of the engines that helped build the railway. Initially he was a fussy engine who used to do shunting at Vicarstown. As the time passed by, he grew bored being stuck in the yard. He wanted to see the world desperately and initially did some mistakes as well. He had left his first passenger train behind. He almost had an accident while delivering some trucks to the Edward’s Station. Later, the Fat Controller started feeling sorry for him for he knew that Thomas was a special little engine.
Thomas’ branch line starts from Knapford and ends at Ffarquhar and he enjoys running it, and he runs it as efficiently as he can.
