Captain Jack Sparrow’s attempt to rescue his former first mate, Joshamee Gibbs, in London, fails and he is brought before King George II. The king wants Jack to guide an expedition to locate the Fountain of Youth before the Spanish do. Jack’s old nemesis, Captain Hector Barbossa, is heading the expedition. Captain Barbossa, after losing his leg and Jack’s ship, the Black Pearl, is now a privateer in service to the British Navy.

Jack escapes. His father, Captain Teague, warns Jack about the Fountain’s tests. He also tells him that someone is impersonating Jack. The impostor is Jack’s former lover, Angelica. She is the daughter of the ruthless pirate Blackbeard. The pirate practices voodoo magic and, with his sword, possesses supernatural powers.

Jack is taken to Blackbeard’s ship, the Queen Anne’s Revenge. There, he is forced to lead the way to the Fountain. He has to find two silver chalices that once belonged to Juan Ponce de León. The chalices are believed to be aboard his lost ship. The Fountain’s water must be drunk simultaneously by two people from the two chalices. One chalice contains a mermaid’s tear, and the person drinking from it will have his life extended. The years of life of the person drinking from the other chalice are drained from his body, and he will die.

Meanwhile, Gibbs has memorized and destroyed Jack’s map. He barters with Barbossa to guide him to the Fountain. Blackbeard knows that a fatal encounter with “a one-legged man” is predestined and he wants to use the Fountain’s power to circumvent this encounter. He sets a course for Whitecap Bay. At the bay, he traps a mermaid. A captive missionary, Philip Swift, falls in love with the mermaid and names her Syrena. Blackbeard then orders Jack to fetch the chalices from de León’s ship.

Jack finds the grounded, decaying vessel. But Barbossa is waiting inside. The Spanish have already taken the chalices. Barbossa only wants revenge against Blackbeard for capturing the Black Pearl, which had forced Barbossa to amputate his own leg in order to escape. Jack and Barbossa join forces to defeat Blackbeard. Then they head to the Spanish camp to steal the chalices.

Meanwhile, Syrena returns Philip’s love, but is tricked into shedding a tear, which is collected by Blackbeard. He then forces Philip to go with him and leaves Syrena to die. While helping Barbossa, Jack and Gibbs have reunited. They both return with the chalices. Jack negotiates with Blackbeard and vows to give him the chalices and lead him to the Fountain if he agrees to release Gibbs and return his confiscated magical compass. Blackbeard agrees to this proposal and Gibbs departs with Jack’s compass.

At the Fountain, Barbossa attacks Blackbeard and his crew. Then, the Spanish, too, attack him. The Spanish king believes that the power of the Fountain is an abomination against God and it should be destroyed. A fierce battle ensues. Barbossa stabs Blackbeard with a poison-laced sword. While removing the sword from her father, accidentally cuts herself with it. Barbossa captures Blackbeard’s magical sword. He assumes command and leaves with Blackbeard’s crew.

Meanwhile, mortally wounded Philip escapes and frees Syrena. She locates the chalices that the Spanish had thrown into deep water, and gives them to Jack. She then retrieves the dying Phillip and takes him underwater to save his life.

Blackbeard and Angelica are dying. Blackbeard wants his daughter to save him by sacrificing herself, to which, Angelica willingly agrees. But Jack switches the cups secretly and gives her the cup containing Syrena’s tear. Thus, Blackbeard is killed and Angelica’s life is saved.

Jack knows that although Angelica loves him, she might want to avenge her father’s death. So, he strands her on an island, thinking that some passing ship would pick her up. Meanwhile, Barbossa, who now has the control of the Queen Anne’s Revenge, reverts to piracy after renouncing his ties to the crown. Gibbs uses Jack’s compass to retrieve the Black Pearl and other captured ships. Blackbeard had magically shrunk and bottled these ships. Both of them head off, hoping to find a way to bring back the Pearl to her original size.

On the island, Angelica finds the washed ashore Blackbeard’s voodoo doll of Jack.

In the movie, Johnny Depp is cast as Captain Jack Sparrow, Penélope Cruz as Angelica, Ian McShane as Edward “Blackbeard” Teach, Geoffrey Rush as Captain Hector Barbossa, Sam Claflin as Philip Swift, Kevin McNally as Joshamee Gibbs, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey as Syrena, Damian O’Hare as Lieutenant Gillette, Greg Ellis as Lt.
