Magic Party Supplies – The Background

Magic Party Supplies are based on magic, a performing art. It entertains the spectators by creating illusions or staging tricks that are seemingly impossible or supernatural. The magic which we are referring to is often called as stage magic to differentiate it from ritual or paranormal magic. The feats performed are called magic tricks, illusions or effects. The person who performs these magic tricks is called an illusionist or a magician. Some magicians are also known as prestidigitators, escape artists, mentalists, or conjurors, according to the tricks or effects they perform.

Magic tricks have been performed throughout history for entertainment as well as for cheating people. It was used to frighten uneducated people, to bring people into obedience and to turn them into followers. Magic, as a profession, has emerged only from the eighteenth century.

The first book of magic tricks was published by Reginald Scot in 1584. The name of the book was The Discoverie of Witchcraft. The book exposed how the tricks of magic were performed. It was also an attempt to underline the fact that witches did not exist. In 1603, on the accession of James I, all the obtainable copies were burned. Those books that survived are now rare. The reprints of the book started to emerge in 1651. Jacob Philadelphia performed tricks of magic throughout Europe and in Russia from 1756 to 1781. He called them scientific exhibitions.

The modern entertainment magic is attributed to Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. He was born is 1805 and died in 1871. He was originally a clockmaker but was interested in magic and magic tricks. In 1840s, he opened a magic theatre in Paris. He used to create such a mechanical automata which appeared to move and act like they were alive.

In 1873, J N Maskelyne and his partner Cooke, both British performers, established their own theatre in London’s Piccadilly, called the Egyptian Hall. They used to perform stage magic. They first exploited the potential of the stage with hidden mechanisms and assistants.

It was Alexander Herrmann (1844–1896) who first presented the look of a ‘typical’ magician – wavy hair, a tailcoat, a goatee and a top hat. He was a French magician and was also known as Herrmann the Great. He was from the first-family of magic and is often considered the greatest magician.

Harry Houdini, the son of a Hungarian rabbi, took his stage name from Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. He had developed various magic tricks and was a great escapologist. He was naturally skilled in various techniques like lockpicking and escaping straitjackets. He used to fully exploit the range of conjuring techniques like fake equipment. In Scranton, Pennsylvania, there is a Houdini Museum that is dedicated to him, his performance skill and his great show business.

Some of the famous magicians of the 20th century are Alexander, Okito, Harry Blackstone Sr., Harry Blackstone Jr. and Theodore Annemann. Other famous ones are Howard Thurston, Joseph Dunninger, Cardini, John Scarne, Dai Vernon, Siegfried & Roy, Tommy Wonder and Doug Henning.

Some of the famous magicians of the 21st century are David Copperfield, James Randi, Lance Burton, David Blaine, Penn and Teller and Criss Angel.

Production is a popular magic category where the magician produces something from something or nothing. The most popular act is producing a rabbit from an empty hat. Other tricks are cards from thin air or a shower of coins from an empty box or bucket. Also popular are a dove from a pan or hat, or the magician himself appearing in a puff of smoke. Another popular category is Vanish; the magician makes something vanish. Like vanishing a cage of doves or a coin, an assistant from a cabinet or milk from a newspaper. Some of the magicians have even made the Statue of Liberty and the Taj Mahal disappear. Then there is the Transformation where something is transformed from one state into another. Like transforming a white handkerchief into various colors, a lady into tiger etc.

There are other magic categories like Restoration. Here the magician destroys an object and then restores it back to its original state. Like a rope that had been cut, a newspaper or a currency note is torn, a woman is cut in half or a watch, borrowed from the audience, is smashed to pieces. Then there is the Teleportation, where the magician makes something to move from one place to another. Like a borrowed ring or a watch is found in a ball of wool or an assistant or the magician himself, from a cabinet to the back of the theatre. Escape is another category where the magician is placed in handcuffs or a straitjacket or any other restraining device and he escapes to safety. Levitation is another technique where the magician defies gravity, like making something or someone float in the air.

Then there is the category called Penetration where a solid object is made to pass through another. Like swords passing through the assistant or a person walking through the mirror. Prediction is another technique where the magician correctly predicts the outcome of an event or the choice made by a spectator. Like an object drawn on a paper or a slate or the total amount of loose change in someone’s pocket.
