The movie stars Robert Downey, Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Stephanie Szostak, Rebecca Hall, James Badge Dale, Ben Kingsley and Jon Favreau among others. The film was an instant hit. It is the highest-grossing movie of 2013 and fifth-highest-grossing film of all time.

The hero of the movie is Tony Stark. In 1999, Stark was with scientist Maya Hansen in a New Years Eve party. The scientist had invented Extremis, an experimental regenerative treatment that can allow recovery from crippling injuries. Aldrich Killian, a disabled scientist offers them a place in his company, Advanced Idea Mechanics. But Stark humiliates Killian by rejecting the offer.

Today, Stark is suffering from panic attacks due to his experiences when the aliens invaded New York. He has created friction with Pepper Potts, his girlfriend. Also, he has created dozens of Iron Man suits. Terrorist the Mandarin has started a string of bombings but the intelligence agencies are clueless as they cannot find any forensic evidence.

When Happy Hogan, the security chief of Stark Industries is injured in one such bombings, Stark issues a threat to the Mandarin on television. In return, the Mandarin destroys Stark’s home. Hansen comes to warn Stark but gets caught himself in the attack, but somehow survives along with Potts. With his artificial intelligence JARVIS, Stark escapes and reaches rural Tennessee. But his experimental armor lacks enough power to take him back to California. Now the world believes that Iron Man is dead.

Stark teams with a precocious 10-year-old boy named Harley and starts investigating a local explosion. He finds out that the bombings were actually to disguise Extremis’ flaws and the deaths of the veterans. Then, Ellen Brandt and Eric Savin, two Mandarin agents attack him.

Stark traces the Mandarin to Miami with Harley’s help and gains access to his headquarters. There he comes to know that Mandarin is a British actor named Trevor Slattery. But he claims that he is unaware of what is going on in his name. Actually, the Mandarin is a creation of Killian. He has used Hansen’s Extremis for his cure and later for injured war veterans.

Killian captures Stark and tells him that he has kidnapped Potts as well and wants Stark’s aid to fix the flaws of Extremis. When Hansen changes her mind about the plan, Killian kills her, too. Killian has also lured the former War Machine, James Rhodes (now known as Iron Patriot), into a trap and asks him to steal the armor. But Stark escapes and unites with Rhodes.

Stark comes to know that Killian wants to attack President Ellis aboard Air Force One. Stark is able to save some passengers and crew but Killian abducts the President and destroys Air Force One. Killian wants to kill Ellis on live television. He will make the vice president a puppet leader who will follow Killian’s orders.

Rhodes saves the president and takes him to safety. Stark goes to save Potts and finds that she has survived the procedure of Extremis. But before he can reach her she falls down from a collapsing rig. Stark traps Killian in an self-destructing Iron Man but Killian survives. Killian tells him that he is the real Mandarin. Meanwhile Potts, who has survived her fall due to the powers of Extremis, kills Killian.

Stark destroys each Iron Man suit to win back Potts. Slattery and the vice president are arrested. Stark stabilizes the Extremis effects of Potts. Through a surgery, the shrapnel embedded near Stark’s heart is removed. He throws his chest arc reactor into the sea.
