This is the first movie in Planes trilogy and is a spin-off of Pixar’s Cars. The movie was initially set to be released as a direct-to-video movie like most other DisneyToon’s movies, but it is being released in theaters on August 9, 2013. The movie is released in 3D formats (RealD 3D and Disney Digital 3D) as well. Its sequel, Planes: Fire & Rescue, will be released in 2014.
Dusty Crophopper is a small-town cropdusting plane. He wants to compete as a high-flying air racer and is always dreaming about it. But there are two problems: he is afraid of heights and he is not built for racing. Ripslinger is the defending champ of the villainous racing circuit. Skipper Riley, a seasoned aviator, decides to help Dusty to defeat Ripslinger. Now, Dusty has to heights he never thought possible and his courage is really put to the test.
The films Cars and Cars 2 were produced by Pixar. Although Pixar has not produced Planes, the executive producer of Planes is John Lasseter, who is the director of Cars and Cars 2 and chief creative officer of both Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar. Originally, Jon Cryer was going to voice Dusty, the main protagonist of the movie. He even voiced the original teaser trailer of the film. But later Cryer opted out of production and Dane Cook replaced him. So, later, the teaser trailer was modified with Cook’s voice in place of Cryer’s and was released on February 27, 2013.
Originally, the film was to get a theatrical release in only Europe and it was to be released as a direct-to-video in North America in Fall 2013. But Disney was quite impressed by the completed sequences of the film and it decided to give the film a theatrical release. The change of plan to release a movie in theaters instead of video has also happened with Doug’s 1st Movie (1999), Toy Story 2 (1999), The Tigger Movie (2000), and Return to Never Land (2002). After the release of Pooh’s Heffalump Movie in 2005, around eight and a half years back, this is the first DisneyToon Studios film that has been released theatrically in North America.
The movie premiered at an annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts at the The Fly-In Theater at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh in Oshkosh, Wisconsin in a special screening during an annual gathering of aviation enthusiasts. It will be screened at the biennial convention for Disney fans called D23 Expo on August 9, 2013.
