Froggie Fun Party Supplies – The Background

Froggie Fun Party Supplies are based on cute looking frogs. Frogs are amphibians that have a short body, no tail and protruding eyes. They are exceptional jumpers. They have permeable skin so they are semi-aquatic; they live in humid places, but can move easily on land too. They lay their eggs in lakes, ponds or puddles. Their larvae are called tadpoles. Tadpoles have gills as they develop in water. Frog calls are noticeable in their mating season during the night or day.

There are more than five thousand species of frogs and are found mainly in tropical rainforests. But some of the species are endangered as their population is decreasing due to various reasons.

Frogs have appeared in literature, fairy tales, religion and symbolism. They have uses as foods and pets too.

Frogs are amphibians but they are different. Apart from the lack of tails their large hind legs are more suited to jumping than swimming and walking. But like other amphibians they breathe through their skin. Their skin should always remain moist, because oxygen has to be dissolved in an aqueous film that is present on the skin and passes to the blood. But this absorbing the oxygen through the skin has its disadvantages too. The toxins present in the environment can also pass through their skin and then get dissolved into their bloodstream. This is the main reason of the decline of some of the species of the frogs.

Frogs can be as small as 0.39 inches and as large as 12 inches. Because they don’t have loose connective tissue, their skin hangs loosely on their body. Different frogs have different skin textures; their skin can be smooth, folded or warty. One of the eyelid membranes of frogs is transparent and it protects their eyes underwater. Most species of frogs have teeth, but most have their teeth on their upper jaw. Because they don’t have teeth on their lower jaw, they have to swallow their food whole. The use of their upper teeth is to hold their food (prey) and keep it there so that they can get a good grip on its prey till they can swallow it. Some of the species don’t even have the upper teeth; they have some cone shaped bones that are used in place of the teeth.

If a frog looses a leg due to any mishap, it can still lead a normal life with its remaining three legs.

Litoria nasuta, an Australian rocket frog, is can 5.5 cm long and it can leap over 2 meters. This is 50 times its body length.

The most common defensive mechanism in frogs is Camouflage. They are able to change their color and with their smooth skin they can disguise themselves as leaves. Some of them change their color between day and night.

Some frogs call so loudly that their call can be heard even a mile away. Frogs call to attract their mates. Sometimes they call in groups, called chorus. Some of the species do not have vocal sacs, but still they can produce their calls. When a frog is in some sort of danger, they produce a distress call. These calls are higher-pitched as these are produced with the mouth open. Only some of the species can produce a distress call. Many species produce a deeper call, known as a croak.

Except for Antarctica, frogs are found all over the world.

The year 2008 was named the Year of the Frog by the zoos and aquariums all around the world.

Frogs are raised commercially all over the world for various reasons. They are treated as a food source. Frog legs are very popular in China, the Philippines, France, some part of Greece, and even in some parts of South America. In schools and university anatomy classes, dead frogs are often used for dissections. Although the concerns about animal welfare has declined this practice all over the world.
